Where Everyone is Welcome

Bethel A.M.E. Church in New Bedford, Massachusetts believes that the Lord’s love knows no color. As a ministry, we are committed to inspiring people of all cultures in leading a Christ-centered life. We always strive to be a community that truly emulates what the Kingdom of God is like. At every level of the Connection and in every local church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church shall engage in carrying out the spirit of the original Free African Society, out of which the AME Church evolved: that is, to seek out and save the lost, and serve the needy.

What Does A.M.E. Mean?

As a multicultural church, we unite all people toward the same purpose of worshipping the one true God—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The A.M.E. in our congregation’s name stands for:

Our church was organized by people of African heritage. However, it does not mean that it was established in Africa nor is it only for persons of African descent.

African

The church also stemmed from the family of Methodist churches. We follow the doctrines of practice and belief set forth by Methodism. In this way, we are able to genuinely live by the plain and simple gospel of Jesus Christ.

Methodist

This refers to the constituting government under which our ministry operates. The bishops of the church are the chief executive and administrative officers of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination.
